How to Create an App Password for Gmail SMTP Setup

Creating an app password allows you to securely connect your Gmail account to other applications, like myflow, without sharing your primary password. This is necessary because Google’s standard login process with two-step verification.

The app password acts as a unique key for these apps, ensuring a secure connection while keeping your primary password safe.


Step 1: Log in to your Google account

  1. Log in to the Google account you want to connect to myflow.


Step 2: Enable two-step verification

  1. In your Google Account, go to the Security tab.

  2. Scroll down to "Signing in to Google".

  3. Make sure Two-step verification is enabled. If it's not, follow the prompts to activate it.

Step 3: Search for "App Passwords"

  1. In the Security tab, find the App Passwords option.

  2. If you don't see this option, ensure that two-step verification is enabled.

  3. Click on App Passwords to proceed.


Step 4: Name your app

  1. Under Select App, choose Other (Custom Name).

  2. Enter myflow (or another name that helps you remember the purpose).

  3. Click Create.


Step 5: Copy the generated app password

  1. A 16-character app password will be generated.

  2. Copy this password and save it in a secure place.

  3. Do not share this password with anyone, as it grants full access to your Gmail account for the specified app.


Managing app passwords

You can manage or delete app passwords anytime from your Google Account's App Passwords section. This is useful if you no longer need the connection or suspect unauthorized access.

Troubleshooting tips

  • Can't find App Passwords? Ensure two-step verification is active and your account is not managed by an organization with restricted settings.

  • Password not working? Recreate the app password and re-enter it in the app settings.
